Tomahawks & Axes Click on image to enlarge My tomahawks are hand forged from iron with a hardened steel edge welded in for durability. The best handles are hickory or ash but curly maple can be used for looks but I don't recommend it for a throwing tomahawk. I usually can get curly hickory and curly ash but can't guarantee that I will have it on hand. The basic difference between a tomahawk and an axe is the handles. A tomahawk handle is inserted from the top and self wedges as it is used. An axe handle inserts from the bottom and has a wedge driven in the top to secure it in place.
Forged Camp Hawk This is a plain, as forged tomahawk with a heavy area at the back (poll) that can be used for light hammering such as stakes in camp. These vary slightly due to being hand made but generally measure 3" on the cutting edge and the head is 7" long. Handles are 18" long. Price $125
Forged Camp Hawk with Filed Finish This is the same style as above but has been filed to brighten it. Price $185
Bright Filed Bag Axe This is a small belt or bag axe with a bright (filed) head. Often these were carried in a sheath on the back of a hunting bag for butchering game. It measures 2 1/4" on the cutting edge, head is 5" long and the handle is about 13" long. The one pictured has a curly hickory handle. Price $175
F&I Bag Axe This small bag axe is copied from one found at an French & Indian war period fort in Maine. Believed to be of French origin. The original was left as forged, no filing and there was no steel insert. The edge was case hardened. This was common to many of the cheaper trade axes and tomahawks in the period. On this style I case harden the edge as well and the case goes very deep and about 3/4" back and it will last many sharpenings. Head is small, about 5 1/2" long with a 2" cutting edge. Handle is 12" long. This one is curly hickory. Price $165
